Sorry, no images again this time either! I gotta find more
dependable help!]Labor Day weekend and Harley night at Castle Rock,
what a combination. That was not the only good news, because Monday was a
holiday, both events were run at night, TT on Saturday night and Short Track in
the darkness of Sunday evening. Another huge bonus was that the Open Money class
on Sunday ran TWO 25 LAP MAINS!! It was some of the best racing EVER. Just
fantastic and a huge pat on the back to Rex Fisher! He was outstanding on his
big Rotax. Pure poetry in motion he is.
Speaking of Fisher's, Davis and Kale put on a great show a
number of times. Those two went at it in a number of classes and Kale just gets
faster with every ride. It is fun to watch him stay closer to Davis with each
race. Davis is just plain fun to see in action. Like his Dad Rex, Davis is just
smooth as water. He just moves with the motorcycle in a way that few do. Kale is
the son of Ryan Fisher, Rex's brother and a great racer in his own right. It was
Ryan's 41st birthday Saturday night and they invited me to sit around the
campfire after the races with them all and it was a great time.
It was also the annual Castle Rock Harley and Metric Cruiser Night. There is a
show for them prior to the Main events and votes are taken for various classes
and then tallied up. During the break before the Main's, they are all brought
out on the track and given their trophies. A few quick laps around the track and
they are off to watch the races again. It was cool to have them and there were
some really nice bikes. My buddy Arnold, who is the flagger in turn four,
brought his two pristine Harley's. They were beautiful and he took home some
nice gold things!
On to the racing. So it was the same two classes as it has
been here all season, 40+ and Evolution. The track was a bit dry-slick on
Saturday night and pretty much a one liner. Whoever got out front, was probably
going to stay there, so as usual the start was everything. In my 40+ heat race I
got a decent start behind that dang Vince Holt. Was riding around behind Vince,
but James Torpey got around me after I bobbled a bit and that was the way we
finished.
Evolution class I got out and led wire to wire, though not
without incident! I try to never look back when I am in the lead as it makes me
nervous. I just ride as hard as I can and wait for that damned checkered flag to
come out. But this time, I was taking it a little easy as I knew the tire was
not in great shape and I had the mains to go and the entire next day, so I
looked over my shoulder on the front straight to see what was going on behind
me, and right there was Gary Roller on his 420 KX. Sheesh! I cranked it up a
notch and kept him at bay until the checkered. Gary is one of the nicest guys on
the track and I love to talk to him after the races.
Main event number one was the 40+ group. Again, three and
four were slick for me. I could not roll the gas on much at all or the rear
would just spin up, so I was not getting a great drive on to the front straight.
We jetted off the start, Holt-man in first and me in second. We stayed that way
for a lap or two until Byers slid around me in one and two and took second from
me. That was the final order with Torpey somewhere behind.
Evolution main event was a nice wire to wire affair. Just the
way I like it. Gary Roller was second again keeping Wes Blevins at bay, which is
just what I needed as he is second in points and I need a bit more of a spread
since I cannot make the last two races of the season!
Saturday and it is the night short track. Night races are
better as the track stays in better shape without the beating sun. The traction
on the track was much better this evening, in fact, it was great! There were
lots of riders and both the 40+ and Evolution classes had two heats each. Of
course I was up against the Holt-man. I had him off the start, but left the
bottom wide-open and he came right in and took it away from me! Dang, I hate
when I lose because of stupidity. We finished the heat race just like that. I
could stay even with him, but not gain on him anywhere.
Evolution heat was wire to wire. Good starts are everything
here and I had another one and it was all over there.
Remember I said that they ran two 25 lap heats for the Pro
Money class tonight? Well, they were the first main event, then we were number
4. The pros had put a bit of dust up off the main line though and made it kind
of slick again. For the 40+ main event and I am gridded third. I got a good
start behind who? Yep, Holt-man. Gonna buy him a red cape one of these days. He
is just Mr. Consistency. Once he is out front, it is about all done. I slid up
in three and four with both ends sliding quite a bit. Byers used that
opportunity to pass me and a lap later Torpey got around me when I did the same
thing again. I was working too hard an bobbled twice and now I am in fourth and
not happy about it. I am hounding Torpey for all I am worth, but cannot get
around him. We take the white flag and I am on him like stink on doo-doo.
Finally, in turn four, I go up high to start my drive a little earlier and he
gets a little wheel spin coming off the corner. We are drag racing down the
front straight and I get him by a wheel at the line! It was a great finish to
the race!
Evolution was another good race. After the holeshot, I was
leading, but still sliding out of three and four. Arnold, my buddy the flagger
in four, was not giving me his usual gap sign, so I knew something was up. Then
Shipley came by me on the inside of four where I had slid up once again! He had
a great drive out of four and took it from me. Though I dogged him, I could not
pass him and he took a well deserved first place finish.
See ya at the next race! Thanks for reading!
